Illustration is an increasingly broad specialism. Today's practitioners challenge traditional notions of what illustration is, can be and, excitingly, what it can achieve. Graduates of Illustration at Cumbria have gone on to create work and find careers in a wide variety of industries.

Izzy carroll
|
Over the course of her degree, Izzy developed an interest in illustration for publishing, specialising in children's books. These images show her final major project, where she illustrated 'The Tale of Tsarevich Ivan, The Fire Bird and The Grey Wolf' which she funded and printed through kickstarter. Izzy was, in fact, the first student to create a fully populated Kickstarter campaign for her fmp submission.

Hazel masonGraduating in 2018, Hazel was awarded both the Derwent Art prize and Dulux's award for Colour for her final major project where she illustrated Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. She has gone on to work with clients such as Computer Arts magazine (for whom she wrote a piece on the use of colour and also featured in and created the cover for their 'graduates to watch' edition), Dulux paint and Oh Comely magazine.

Cumbrian to the bone, Rachel has created illustrations for clients such as The Daily Telegraph, The Skinny and The American Alliance of Museums, she has recently seen her work published in Caterpillar books' In Focus: Space and the Washington Post.

Jenny has created surface pattern for print companies, as well as commercial illustrations for international clients; just in case that wasn't enough, she has also worked as a children’s product designer. She is currently a freelance artist-illustrator, and facilitator delivering arts workshops across south east England.

ed merlin murrayIs Ed's work illustration? Is it fine art? Can it be both?
Ed's prodigious output saw him commissioned by Atlantic Records and publishing his own book whilst still only in his second year at University. Ed is addicted to Muji sketchbooks, brush pens and painting discarded dolls. He writes comics about his dogs and also plays piano. He posts on Instagram every day (where, he' informs us, he's a bit of a big deal). |

Harry's interest in popular culture and music has seen him making a name for himself working on album covers, self initiating a series of hip-hop portraits (under the name of Studio Haytch) as well as creating work for the BBC's Peaky Blinders; but most of his professional work has been in the world of sport and sport promotion where he has worked for clients such as FIFA, Liverpool FC, CBS broadcasting, Pepsi Max and The Kansas City Chiefs. Based on the west coast of southern Scotland, Lucy's love for the landscapes, shorelines and towns that surround her is reflected in her work, which sells in galleries up and down the U.K. Lucy is currently studying an M.A in Creative Practice, back with us at the UoC.

Rob Marshall
|
Both an illustrator and graphic designer Rob's work combines bright and colourful quirkiness with strong typography and classic design principles - often with an added dollop of humour. Rob's was the best nickname to come out of a student's time on the course. He's asked us not to include it here.

Yvette Earl

Yvette's work speaks of a love of geometry, colour, pattern and Cumbria. Yvette is passionate about promoting her home town of Carlisle and often depicts local buildings in her illustrations.

Eliza GregoryEliza's final major project, The Tale of Princes Kaguya, an illustrated Japanese folk tale, was recognised as one of the most impressive FMP's that we've ever seen. Combining strong drawing skills with subtle digital manipulation, Eliza was able to create a very human and emotive piece of work. She's also really into Dr Who.

Becki specialises in portraiture, mostly inspired by pop culture and the music she enjoys.
In addition to creating and selling her own work , Becki has a particularly interested in working in editorial, advertising, book jacket design & the album artwork sector. |
