Keep It Simple Stupid*

An interesting and important conversation was recently had in level 5 as part of an exploration of conceptual illustration - conceptual editorial illustrations to be specific. What came to light in reviewing thumbnails and roughs, is a tendency to believe that ideas/concepts/proposals have to be 'clever' and require 'complexity'.
WRONG!

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

Consider David Foldvari's illustration of a revolver for the Observer. If you were to describe the illustration, all you could say is that it's a revolver with money for a handle. What's it doing? Nowt! Absolutely nothing. Where is it? It's nowhere.
Is someone holding it? No.

But it is rather wonderfully depicted and presumably, a crystal clear communicative accompaniment for the article it illuminates.

In upcoming projects or personal work, consider simplicity and clarity your target.

SAY LESS. SAY IT BEAUTIFULLY.

Keep It Simple Stupid

The acronym of "Keep it simple, stupid" was reportedly coined by Kelly Johnson, lead engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works (creators of the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird spy planes, among many others).

Report out now

A post shared by Association of Illustrators (@theaoi)

The AOI, along with four leading creator-led organisations, have today launched a ground-breaking new report into the impact of unregulated generative AI on creators.

What is it?The new report, Brave New World? Justice for creators in the age of GenAI, shows the devastating impact generative AI is having on creators’ jobs by using the evidence of more than 10,000 creators across music, writing, illustration, photography and performance. Without intervention from government, we are at risk of losing our creators who are the beating heart of our celebrated creative industries, worth £124.6 billion to the UK economy.

Brave New World? is published by a coalition of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), the Society of Authors (SoA), Equity, the Association of Illustrators (AOI), and the Association of Photographers (AOP), all members of the Creators’ Rights Alliance (CRA). Together, alongside creators, we made a stand at the heart of London’s tech hub, Granary Square, Kings Cross.
